Urology

Urology is the medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the urinary tract system in both males and females, as well as conditions affecting the male reproductive system. Urologists are trained to manage a wide range of conditions, including urinary tract infections, kidney stones, prostate disorders, bladder issues, and urological cancers such as prostate cancer, bladder cancer, and kidney cancer. Additionally, they perform surgical procedures such as vasectomies, nephrectomies (removal of the kidney), and transurethral resections of the prostate (TURP) for conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Urologists also play a crucial role in the management of male infertility, erectile dysfunction, and other reproductive health concerns.

Parts of the urinary system:

  • Kidneys: Filter waste and excess fluids from the blood to produce urine.
  • Ureters: Tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
  • Bladder: Stores urine until it is expelled from the body during urination.
  • Urethra: Tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body, and in males, also serves as the passage for semen during ejaculation.
